Climate Models
Atmospheric Models
CHRM
The Climate High Resolution Model (CHRM) is the
Regional Climate Model (RCM) presently used at the Institute for
Atmospheric and Climate Science of the ETH Zürich. It is largely
based on the High Resolution Model (HRM) of the German Weather
Service (DWD) and was adapted for use in climate studies (Lüthi
et al. 1996, Vidale et al. 2003).
CLM
The Climate Version of the Local Model (CLM) is a nonhydrostatic
regional climate model developed from the LM by the CLM-Community
. Since 2005 it is the Community-Model of the german climate research.
The model has been used for simulations on time scales up to centuries
and spatial resolutions between 1 and 50 km.
CRCM
The Canadian RCM (CRCM), locatable over any part of the globe,
recently emerged from the conjoining of the semi-Lagrangian semi-implicit
MC2 (Compressible community mesoscale model) dynamical kernel
with the CCCma atmospheric GCM physics parameterization package.
Hadley
Centre model configurations
The computer climate models used for the majority
of the work at the Hadley Centre are detailed three-dimensional
representations of major components of the climate system. They
are mostly run on the Met Office's NEC SX-6 supercomputers. We
use these models in various different configurations, which are
explained below.
Simple models of the climate system
have been developed and used both to gain physical insight into
major features of the behaviour of the climate system, and to
produce climate projections for a range of assumptions about emissions
of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
HIRHAM
A modeling group has been established at AWI
to improve our understanding of the Arctic climate system. The
aim is to simulate the coupled atmosphere-sea ice-ocean system
in the Arctic. The coupled model system includes:
* Atmosphere, represented by HIRHAM
* Ocean, represented by MOM-2
* Sea ice, represented by a dynamic-thermodynamic sea ice model
[Lemke at al, 2000] with elastic-viscous plastic rheology according
to Hunke & Dunkowicz [1997].
The model domain includes the whole Arctic north of about 60°N.
MM5
The PSU/NCAR mesoscale model (known as MM5) is
a limited-area, nonhydrostatic, terrain-following sigma-coordinate
model designed to simulate or predict mesoscale atmospheric circulation.
PRECIS
PRECIS stands for "Providing REgional Climates
for Impacts Studies." Developed at the Hadley Centre at the
UK Met Office, PRECIS is a regional climate modelling system designed
to run on a Linux based PC. PRECIS can be easily applied to any
area of the globe to generate detailed climate change projections.
RACMO
Regional Atmospheric Climate Model (RACMO) Version 2 Single Column
Model
RCAO
RCAO is the Rossby Centre regional Atmosphere-Ocean model (Döscher
et al. 2002), incorporating the Rossby Centre Regional Atmosphere
Model, RCA (Rummukainen et al. 2001, Jones et al. 2004), and the
Rossby Centre Regional Ocean Model, RCO (Meier et al. 2003). It
also includes a river routing routine based on a large-scale application
of the HBV hydrological model from Bergström et al. (1973)
and Lindström et al. (1997), and accounts for lakes and lake
systems following Ljungemyr et al. (1996) and Omstedt (1999).
The coupler software is based on Valcke et al. (2000).
RegCM
RegCM is a 3-dimensional, sigma-coordinate,
primitive equation regional climate model. Version 3 of RegCM
is the latest. It is developed and supported by scientists inside
and outside of PWC/ICTP.
REMO,
the Regional Model of Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorologie,
Hamburg
REMO was developed upon the request of the reviewers
within the BMBF-Förderschwerpunkt Wasserkreislauf as the
atmospheric component of the coupled atmosphere-hydrology model
system. Development and application of this system was considered
a central task within the international BALTEX (BALTIC Sea Experiment).
RSM
NCEP Regional Spectral Model
WRF
The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model is a next-generation
mesocale numerical weather prediction system designed to serve
both operational forecasting and atmospheric research needs. It
features multiple dynamical cores, a 3-dimensional variational
(3DVAR) data assimilation system, and a software architecture
allowing for computational parallelism and system extensibility.
WRF is suitable for a broad spectrum of applications across scales
ranging from meters to thousands of kilometers.
